Two Focused French printed resources: 1 serious, 1 fun
The “serious” fold-out holds all the French one needs to function in everyday situations. As a school cheat sheet, it offers, in four pages, the French one needs to learn.
The 600 “essential” words come from a list published by the
French Ministry of Education. They represent
20% of the vocabulary that French speakers use 80% of the time.
The words are presented in three grammatical categories along with the major verb tenses. This is an updated, broader, universal version of the booklet “Keys to French” specifically designed for Grade 7-9 students. Close to 80,000 copies have been used in Canadian schools.
The 2000 words of the “fun” fold-out look and mean the same in English and French. Unlike with the serious fold-out, the content of this fold-out must not be learned! These “easy to recognize” French words are provided simply to encourage Anglophones with French . And it did, as shown by the popularity of the YouTube video A French story you’ll understand, specifically created to emphasize French-English similarities.
The fold-out also provides useful pronunciation and spelling tips.
These words were selected from everyday conversations and from a variety of current media.
Three Focused French stories
The stories are created using the 600 essential words & many similar French-English words.
Divided in 22 episodes, the stories engage readers in “real-life French”.
Story I: Two ETs discover Earth (a French Story You’ll Understand 1, popular on YouTube, 12 minute long).
In 10 episodes (tutorials 1-10), it covers 250 of the 600 “essential” words and main verb forms & rules.
Story II: Two ETs learn French (also on YouTube: a French Story You’ll Understand 2, 8 minute long).
In 6 episodes (tutorials 11-16), it covers another 175 “essential” words and more verb forms & rules.
Story III: Two ETs reflect on life This story completes the 2 ETs adventure on Earth, 10 min. long. YouTube video to come.

As shown below, in tutorials, learners at a beginner level go through 10 steps, learners at an intermediate level go through 7 steps (skipping steps 1-3), and learners at a proficient level go through 4 steps (skipping steps 1-6).
